Other Sequence Analysis Packages

There are many other sequence analsyis packages that are commercially available. Some examples are shown below: (note: this is not a comprehensive list. Try these two searches: Mac and PC

Mac
  1. MacVector. A popular commercial analysis suite for the Mac
  2. Lasergene. An expensive, but full featured suite for both PC and Mac. This is the main competitor to vectorNTI.
  3. DNAstrider (and other free software) too. You can't beat the price.
  4. Other Free Software. A sampling of some other DNA and protein analysis software available for the Mac.
PC
  1. Omega. A version of MacVector for the PC
  2. Lasergene. An expensive, but full featured suite for both PC and Mac. This is the main competitor to vectorNTI.
  3. JellyFish. A "dynamic" DNA sequence analysis package.

There are also a variety of web-based solutions, many of which are listed in Pedro's Molceular Biology Applications (Note: This was last updated about 7 or 8 years ago, but many of the links are still active)

At UT, we also have the GCG Suite available for use

Most of this class will focus on using GCG, and on doing things in GCG that you cannot do in VectorNTI

Classes

  1. SeqWeb overview
  2. Getting sequences into seqweb, and making restriction maps
  3. Performing BLAST searches
  4. Pattern Recognition - Helices, helix-turn-helix, and coiled coils
